Based in the Paris area, Four Knobs has long been associated with the Syrinx Music family, as the pair frequently played at label events, showcasing their live modular performances. Ethertone is the first Four Knobs EP on Syrinx Music, and displays the exploratory side of the project, following on their recent Antimonium EP as Mu Arae on Basse Cour Records, which focused on their techno excursions.

Based on an hypnotic drum pattern that gradually gets more complex, “Aswan” opens the EP with what sounds like a trip through oceanic depths, as melancholy pads and uncertain sounds slowly find their pace through the mix. The centrepiece of the EP, “Spinning” draws closer to Four Knobs’ live sets, though it remains forward-thinking throughout: taking cues from acid & techno, “Spinning” is an exercise on restraint, seeking maximal expressiveness through minimalism. Title-track “Ethertone” closes the EP on a drumless take, pushing the duo’s sense of experimentation to the front: the track is driven forward by an ambiguous synth melody, which works as a canvas on which various sounds aggregate.

Diverse yet cohesive, Ethertone is a great introduction to the sounds of the Four Knobs project, as well as another entry fitting perfectly Syrinx Music’s aesthetics, at the crossroads between the lab and the club.
